Magnetic waves can treat most severe form of epilepsy

πŸ”¬ Could rTMS be a game-changer for refractory status epilepticus (RSE) and superrefractory status epilepticus (SRSE)?

Our systematic review explored the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a potential off-label treatment for these challenging conditions. The results are promising:

βœ… 75.8% of patients experienced cessation of (S)RSE within four days of rTMS treatment.
πŸ” 47% recurrence rate among patients with follow-up data.
πŸ“Š Median duration of (S)RSE before rTMS: 70 days (ranging from 2 days to 20 years!).

While these findings are based on Level IV studies and may have reporting biases, they highlight the potential of rTMS in cases where conventional treatments fail. Further research is essential to understand its role in clinical practice.
